Hypertext Based Software Package Documentation
If you are working in a UNIX environment, with a lot of software packages
from different sources installed, you will probably know how hard it may be
to find a particular program. As soon as you know, which packages
there are on your system on what they are about using the man
pages will show you the way to go. But: who knows all the software on a
system? Who could you know what which packages are there? To which package
does the binary xy belong, its name being unmeaningful and with no manpage
being available? Try it??
We did face this and similar issues several years ago in our own environment.
Thus came hdocu.
hdocu was written to meet our special needs, but should be applicable
in may environments. It has proven very useful for us. hdocu is available
under the terms of the
GPL.

Hyptertext-basierte Dokumentation installierter Software
Wenn Sie an einem UNIX-Rechner arbeiten, auf dem so einiges an Software
installiert ist, kennen Sie vermutlich das Problem, ein passendes Programm
zu finden. Sobald man weiß, welche Programme installiert sind
und wozu sie so ungefähr dienen, kann man mit man ganz
gut weiterkommen. Aber: wer kennt schon alle installierten Programme? Und
woher sollte man wissen, was überhaupt installiert ist? Wozu gehört
dieses Programm xy, dessen Name nichtssagend ist, und leider auch keine manpage
existiert? Ausprobieren??
Vor diesen und ähnlichen Problemen standen wir vor etwa zwei Jahren
auch in unser eigenen Installation. Also enstand hdocu.
hdocu ist zwar speziell auf unsere eigenen Bedürfnisse
zugeschnitten, sollte aber in vielen Umgebungen einsetzbar sein. Es hat sich
bei uns bestens bewährt. hdocu unterliegt der
GPL.
